Brother HL-L2350DW: How to Enable Automatic Duplex Printing

📅 March 15, 2026⏰ 7 min read✎ DuplexFix Team

The Brother HL-L2350DW is one of the best-selling duplex printers under $150, and for good reason. It has built-in automatic duplex printing, which means it flips and prints both sides automatically without any user intervention. But you need to enable it first. Here's how, plus troubleshooting if something goes wrong.

Auto-Duplex on the HL-L2350DW

The HL-L2350DW includes a hardware automatic duplexer (described in Brother's specs as "Automatic 2-sided print"). The printer can flip and print both sides without any user intervention. It supports duplex on A4 and Letter paper, 60-105 gsm weight.

Laser advantage: Unlike inkjet duplex printing, laser toner is dry immediately, no smearing concern. Laser duplex printing is also significantly faster than inkjet duplex.

Enable Auto-Duplex: Windows (HL-L2350DW)

Method 1. Per-job in print dialog

  1. Press Ctrl+P from your application
  2. Select the Brother HL-L2350DW and click Preferences
  3. In the Basic tab, find 2-sided / Booklet
  4. Select 2-sided from the dropdown
  5. Choose Long-edge binding (portrait) or Short-edge binding (landscape)
  6. Click OK and Print

Method 2. Set as system default

  1. Go to Settings → Printers & scanners
  2. Click Brother HL-L2350DW → Printer properties
  3. Click Printing Defaults
  4. On the Basic tab, set 2-sided to 2-sided
  5. Click Apply, all future print jobs will default to duplex

Enable Auto-Duplex: Mac (HL-L2350DW)

  1. Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners → Brother HL-L2350DW
  2. Click Options & Supplies → Options tab
  3. Make sure Duplex is checked/enabled
  4. When printing: Cmd+P → Show Details → Layout dropdown → set Two-Sided to Long-Edge Binding

Make Duplex the Default on HL-L2350DW (Windows)

To save paper automatically on every print job:

  1. Right-click the Brother HL-L2350DW in Printers & scanners
  2. Click Printing preferences (not Properties)
  3. On the Basic tab, set 2-sided / Booklet to 2-sided
  4. Click Apply and OK

This sets the per-user default. Note: "Printing Preferences" vs "Printing Defaults", use Preferences for per-user, Defaults for system-wide (affects all users on this machine).

Troubleshoot HL-L2350DW Duplex Issues

2-sided option greyed out in Windows

Open Printer Properties → Device Settings tab. Verify Duplex: Available. If it shows "Not Available" or "None", change it. Also ensure you have the full Brother driver installed (not the Windows generic driver), download from brother.com/support.

Duplex prints fine but page order is scrambled

This occasionally happens with large PDFs in certain applications. Use DuplexReady to normalize the PDF page order before printing to the HL-L2350DW.

Paper jams in the duplex unit

Open the back cover of the HL-L2350DW to access the duplex jam area. Remove any jammed paper gently, pulling in the direction of paper travel. Clean the duplex rollers if jams recur. Use paper within the recommended weight range (60-105 gsm).

FAQ

The hardware supports automatic duplexing, but you need to select it in the print dialog or set it as the default. The printer doesn't activate duplex printing on its own, you must enable it per-job or set it as the system default as described above.

Long-edge binding (also called "Flip on Long Edge") flips pages like a book, correct for portrait documents. Short-edge binding flips pages like a notepad, correct for landscape documents or documents meant to be bound at the top. Use long-edge for standard document duplex printing.

Yes. The Brother driver has a "Booklet" mode under the 2-sided/Booklet dropdown. Select it, choose the binding side, and the driver will automatically arrange pages for booklet printing. Alternatively, use DuplexReady for more control over the booklet layout.
