How to Enable Duplex Printing on a Network Printer (Office & Home Setup)

Network printers can be tricky because the duplex settings can live in different places, the Windows driver, Mac preferences, the printer's own web interface, or a central server. This guide walks through each location so you can find and enable duplex.

Enable Duplex on a Network Printer (Windows)

Step 1. Open Printer Properties

Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners. Click your network printer → Printer properties.

Step 2. Enable duplex in Device Settings

Go to the Device Settings tab. Look for Duplex Unit, Duplex Printing Unit, or Automatic Duplex. If it's set to "Not Installed" or "None", change it to Installed or Available. This tells Windows the hardware is capable of duplex printing.

Step 3. Set duplex as default (optional)

In the same Printer Properties, go to the Advanced tab → Printing Defaults. Find the Print on Both Sides or Duplex Printing setting and set it to Flip on Long Edge.

Why "Duplex Unit: Not Installed" appears on network printers: Windows sometimes loses the duplex capability flag when a network printer is installed without the full manufacturer driver. Re-installing the printer using the manufacturer's driver package (not the generic Windows driver) usually resolves this.

Enable Duplex on a Network Printer (Mac)

  1. Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners
  2. Click your network printer, then click Options & Supplies
  3. Under the Options tab, find Duplex Unit or Auto Duplex and check the box to enable it
  4. Click OK, duplex will now be available in the print dialog for this printer

When printing, go to File → Print, expand the print dialog, find the Layout section, and set Two-Sided to Long-Edge binding.

In corporate environments, duplex settings are often managed centrally on a Windows Print Server:

  1. On the print server, open Print Management (printmanagement.msc)
  2. Navigate to your printer → right-click → Properties
  3. Under Device Settings, verify Duplex Unit: Installed
  4. Under Advanced → Printing Defaults, set default duplex to Flip on Long Edge
  5. This setting propagates to all client computers that use this shared printer

For Group Policy: You can enforce duplex printing settings via GPO under User Configuration → Windows Settings → Deployed Printers combined with a per-printer preference script.

Configure Duplex via Printer Web Interface

Most network printers have a built-in web interface at their IP address. This is especially useful for HP, Canon, Epson, and Xerox office printers:

Step 1. Find the printer's IP

Print a configuration page from the printer's control panel, or check your router's DHCP list. The IP is typically something like 192.168.1.xxx.

Step 2. Open the web interface

Type the IP address into a browser: http://192.168.1.xxx. Most printers show an EWS (Embedded Web Server) without needing a password.

Step 3. Find print defaults

Navigate to Settings → Print Settings, Copy/Print → Print Settings, or similar. Look for Duplex or Two-Sided Printing and enable it as the default.

Troubleshooting Network Duplex Issues

Duplex option greyed out even though the printer supports it

This almost always means Windows has the printer set up with the generic inbox driver rather than the manufacturer's full driver. Download the full driver from the manufacturer's website, uninstall the current printer, and reinstall with the full driver.

Duplex setting doesn't stick after printing

The per-job setting is overriding the default. Check that you're setting it in "Printing Defaults" (the driver's default), not just "Preferences" (per-session). On Windows, right-click the printer → Printing Defaults for the persistent setting.

Pages print in wrong order on shared office printer

Your IT administrator may have locked the printer settings via Group Policy or the print server configuration. Contact your IT helpdesk to request a change to the printer defaults, or ask them to enable per-user duplex settings.

This requires admin access to the print server. Set the Printing Defaults to duplex on the server-side printer configuration, this propagates to all connected users automatically. Alternatively, use Group Policy to deploy the printer with default duplex settings.

This is often a page-order issue with the printer's output tray direction. Large office printers typically output pages face-up in the correct order, but some models output face-down which reverses the sequence for duplex jobs.
